1859 JACKSON COUNTY JAIL - POSSIBLE EVP's

Close Window

Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP) - Disembodied "voices" and sounds imprinted on audio recording devices....they are alleged to be from the dead.

Reviewing the audio recordings captured at the 1859 Jackson County Jail Museum, there were several strange sounds that needed to be examined further. They were listened to over and over again and reviewed by several investigators. A few were determined to be background noise or something said by an investigator... rather than being "disembodied voices."

After a full analysis, we are left with three unexplained sounds that could possibly be EVP's. Below you will find an unaltered sound or video clip that puts each unexplained sound in context. Next, there is a short unaltered sound or video clip that isolates the unexplained sound. And finally, we have used Audacity software to "amplify" the isolated sound clips. The "amplified" sound clips are clearly labeled below....

POSSIBLE EVP #1 - CELL #1 - UNEXPLAINED

This possible EVP was recorded in Cell #1 on a digital recording device by Stew, with Mark and Chris present in the cell.

When you listen to the long version of this MP3 file you will hear you will hear me asking, "If something bad happened to you here...we want to know about it...tell us about it...show us...communicate with us in some way." After that there is a long passage of static-filled silence. You can hear the light "whooshing" of an analog tape-recorder that is taping on the other side of the cell. The unexplained sounds come at the end of the tape and were not heard by any of those investigators present when the recording was made. This is a very faint EVP. Even the "amplified" version of it is very difficult to hear.

Here is the unexplained sound isolated out, but still unaltered:

Here is the same unexplained sound, but "amplified" with Audacity software:

WAV files in case MP3's don't work for you: Long Unaltered, Short Unaltered, Short Amplified

Different people have heard different things towards the end there...so we'll let you listen to it and decide for yourself. Personally, of the two unexplained sounds we found at the 1859 Jail, this is the least convincing for me. But I do hear something there....

Once you have listened to these MP3's, please Click Here to go over to our message board and read our theories as to what caused these sounds or what these sounds might be saying. While you are there, please take a few moments and post your own theory. We'd like to hear everyone's impressions.

POSSIBLE EVP #2 - STAIRS OF 1903 JAIL EXPANSION - UNEXPLAINED

This possible EVP was recorded on the Stairs using a digital recording device by Shawn, with Dave present on the stairs.

When you listen to the long version of this MP3 file you will hear you will you hear Shawn asking, "And I'm sure if you were alone by yourself in this building at night...(unexplained noise)...you know it probably settles and...." The possible EVP is the unexplained noise that occurs in between the two halves of his recorded comment. It was not heard by either Shawn or Dave at the time it was recorded. This EVP is not as faint, and of the two EVP's we found this one appears to be much more distinct.

Here is the unexplained sound isolated out, but still unaltered:

Here is the same unexplained sound, but "amplified" with Audacity software:

Frances of After Dark Paranormal cleaned this isolated version of the Possible EVP using Denoiser software, and shared it with me. This Cleaned Version is definitely worth a listen. And a big, "Thank you," to Frances!

WAV files in case MP3's don't work for you: Long Unaltered, Short Unaltered, Short Amplified, Cleaned

Once you have listened to these MP3's, please Click Here to go over to our message board and read our theories as to what caused these sounds or what these sounds might be saying. While you are there, please take a few moments and post your own theory. We'd like to hear everyone's impressions.

Please post your own thoughts prior to reaching the last section of this page. There is further analysis of EVP #2 at the bottom of this page and reading it prior to posting your own opinion will influence your perception of what you heard. We don't want that to happen. But before we get to that, let's examine EVP #3....

POSSIBLE EVP #3 - MARSHALL'S OFFICE - UNEXPLAINED

This possible EVP was recorded in the Marshall's Office using a Sony CCD-TRV66 Hi 8 video camera by Mark, with Edward, Valerie, Chris, Mike, Dave, Shawn, and Lindsy present in the room.

When you view the long version of this video you will see the camera panning past Ghost Vigil investigators in the Marshall's Office. You will hear me describing how the office was set up when the 1859 Jail was operational. Specifically you'll hear me say, "People would come in through this door to, um...pay their fines or talk to the sheriff or turn themselves in or make complaints. And he would sit there with his back up against that wall...(unexplained sound over the top of what I'm saying)..." In the short version it focuses very specifically on the unexplained sound.

The unexplained sound was not heard at the time of this recording. No one else in the group was talking or making any other sounds at that time. Having listened to the entire video, this is the only time that this odd sound is heard. It should be noted that the analog video tape was captured to a digital file. I have reviewed the original analog video tape, and it contains the same unexplained sound...elimimating the possibility that this is an artifact of digital compression.

Once you have viewed and listened to these video files, please Click Here to go over to our message board and read our theories as to what caused these sounds or what this sound might be. While you are there, please take a few moments and post your own theory. We'd like to hear everyone's impressions.

A QUICK NOTE ABOUT EVP's

When listening to audio tapes or reviewing photos and videos, its important to keep the following concept in mind:

Pareidolia - (from Greek para, amiss, faulty, wrong + eidolon, diminutive of eidos appearance, form) is a psychological phenomenon involving a vague and random stimulus (usually an image) being mistakenly perceived as recognizable. Common examples include images of animals or faces in clouds, seeing the man in the moon, and hearing messages on records played in reverse.

Pareidolia can affect your perception of an image or visual stimulus...but it is also affect your perception of an auditory stimulus. Our brains are hard-wired to interpret sounds as something we recognize...and many times it will interpret sounds as voices. The sound of a bubbling creek will sound like children whispering. Tires screeching will sound like someone screaming. A door squeaking might sound like a small crying sound.

Many factors can increase the chance of finding false positives while doing EVP work. The quality of the microphone, the protocol used while recording the audio tape, the amount of filtering the audio goes through during analysis, and the quality of the speakers on which the sound is eventually played back.

Ultimately, the best EVP's are found on audio tapes recorded under the strictest of investigation standards and controls. The best EVP's would be ones that have not undergone manipulation of the sound quality, the direction of play-back, or the speed of the recording. And EVP's should be presented without telling the listener exactly what words he/she should be listening for, in order to eliminate the power of suggestion and to diminish somewhat the phenomenon of Pareidolia.

FURTHER ANALYSIS OF EVP #2 IN THE STAIRWELL

(Please don't read this until you have posted your own opinion on the message board)

EVP #2 was recorded in the stairwell in the 1903 jail expansion building which is directly connected to the 1859 Jail. In the Background section of this investigation report it is discussed that museum staff member Lindsey Gaston has detected the unexplained odor of tobacco in this stairwell, and once felt as if he was pushed by something unseen while walking these stairs.

In the Strange Events section of this investigation report, it is described that very early in our investigation Mike smelled an "ashtray" odor in this stairwell...coinciding with Lindsey's story about the unexplained tobacco smell that is often detected there. The odor often comes and goes very quickly, and this was the case with the "ashtray" odor that Mike detected.

Different people will hear different things when listening to EVP #2. Interestingly enough, both Shawn and I independently listened to the recording and independently concluded that it is a voice saying "Get out of here." Shawn and I did not confer on this until after we has both listened to the recording and had come to independent conclusions. We had also both come to the conclusion that the words "Get out of here" were spoken in a stern manner. One hundred other people might hear something different in that recording, but it was interesting that Shawn and I heard the same message there...and with the same tone.

If this is actually an authentic EVP, the message "Get out of here" delivered in a stern manner would seem to be consistent with Lindsey being "pushed" by something unseen while using this stairwell. For me, these circumstantial pieces of evidence become interesting when they begin to tell a story. Want to listen to it again?

Having completed an analysis of the audio tapes we recorded at the 1859 Jackson County Jail, we can now say that none of the audio we collected provides conclusive evidence of paranormal activity during our 4-hour investigation. While the strange sounds were interesting and remain unexplained...they do not constitute conclusive evidence.
